CS371p Spring 2021: Marika Murphy

Where did you grow up?

I lived in California until I was 5, Massachusetts until 12 and then I’ve been in Austin since then.

What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?

I danced ballet in high school, I liked that it gave me a creative outlet and also the physical challenge it posed.

Why did you come to UT?

I came to UT because of the excellent CS program and affordability.

Why are you in this class?

I really enjoyed Software Engineering with Professor Downing; I feel like I learned a lot. I also want to get more comfortable in C++ and gain a deeper understanding of how to actually use object oriented principles while programming.

What are your expectations of this class?

I’m guessing that the workload will be similar to SWE and that I will learn a lot.

How much C++ do you already know?

I have taken no classes in C++ but I have been using it when working on projects for the Autonomous Robotics lab. I feel like it will help to have a deeper understanding of the language though.

How did you like the two lectures?

These past lectures were repeats from last semester, but I’m excited for the coming ones because Profesor Downing is a good lecturer.

How did you feel about the cold calling?

I don’t love cold calling, but I appreciate it for remote learning because it helps motivate me to stay engaged.

What made you happy this week?

I feel like quite a few things made me happy this week. I’ve been cooking good food for myself, my roommate has started teaching me contemporary choreos, and I’ve also gotten some plants to brighten up our space.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip of the week is if you are a window’s/linux user that wants to write a program in swift. You can go onto code-academy, open their swift course, write your own program, and then run it using their interface. I’ve been using it for the first homework for my IOS class.
